Labor of Love

I have always found peppermint creams difficult. With a lot of sugar and very little moisture to form the dough, they are hard work. However, they are worth it as homemade ones are much nicer than the ones bought from the shop, and make a more thoughtful gift than something that can be had by the mere exchange of cash. Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but handcrafted confectionery has its place too.

The making is much harder these days. My shoulders ache and my hands are stiff, but it is done, and the wire rack is filled with heart-shaped sweets, some white, some pink, ready for my wife’s return.

egg white, icing sugar
pain, peppermint and love
home baking and marriage
—both less simple
than they seem
