In My Dreams

One of my former clients is now a realtor. She tells us our house is worth $20 million. At last, we think—someone who sees its true value. In waking life, we can get less than 1/20 of that.

no place to go
but up

I ask my grown niece where she’s living this month—a time warp to childhood years of joint custody. She smiles and says she’s staying with my brother. Where the presents are.

faux mistletoe
some Santas
last forever

My best friend, the heiress, is back. I’m always happy when she makes an appearance—and she’s glad to see me, too. Fast asleep, I forget how long we’ve been estranged.

  1. I got a visceral sense of flipping back and forth between dreams and the waking world with this haibun. This is hard to do well and you absolutely nailed it.
