The Prophet

I discover them at the bottom of a cobwebbed box, beneath dusty diaries and photograph albums, tied together with brittle rubberbands. It’s like a scene from a corny movie: old man finds love letters from his childhood sweetheart and realizes what a fool he was to let her slip away. Laughable, if it wasn’t so accurate. And of course, reading them makes me think of the ones I wrote back, full of cautions about taking our time and not rushing in. Why was I so hesitant about happiness? It’s not that I was wrong in thinking love can’t conquer all; it’s that in saying so, time and again, I was ensuring defeat.

Benedict Grant was born and raised in Scotland and currently lives in Nova Scotia, Canada. He is the author of two collections of haiku and senryu, both published by Red Moon Press: spirit level (2022), which was shortlisted for The Touchstone Distinguished Books Award, and winterizing (2024), which received an Honorable Mention in the Touchstone Distinguished Books Award.
