“Sitting in silence for the climate,” reads a small sign. On the square, a few dozen people sit—some in meditation posture, others on chairs. Most have their eyes closed. There is no music, no speech. One passerby casts an indifferent glance, another a puzzled one. Now and then, someone slows their steps and pauses for a moment.

About the Author

Luc Barbé‘s has been publishing haiku and haibun in the Dutch-language magazine Vuursteen since 2010. In addition to a collection of his own work, he’s published an anthology of haiku about children (2022) and the first Dutch-language haibun anthology, Een stolp van stilte (“A Dome of Silence,” 2024). In 2023, he received a Merit Award in the Ito En contest.
