Apartheid. I didn’t know what it meant. I was too young. I do remember separate toilets for blacks and whites and separate beaches. Everyone in my school was white. I thought it was strange but I didn’t question it, not then. Five years after we arrived, we left. Decades later I revisited South Africa, and my old school. The grounds, the buildings, even the headmaster’s office looked exactly the same—though smaller than in my memory. The school uniform was identical. Only one thing stood out. The children! Dark-skinned and light-skinned hand in hand.
