Juneau

At Mendenhall glacier
following a muddy, foot-worn path,
boots windblown with silt,
cutting round rock basins,
climbing over glacial erratics
scar’d with the rub of time.
Bald eagles perched
on rib-boned driftwood
along the inlet bank up ahead,
a fleet of icebergs
streaked cobalt blue   adrift
exposing a rocky beach.
From the high-hanging valley
melt water plunges onto a sandbar
by the lake at the end of the trail.

thunder mountain
bear claw marks
on the tall cedar
