Amor Fati

“You need to get to the emergency room right away.” It’s my new doctor on the phone, the rheumatologist. I guess he’s figured out what’s wrong with me. My mind flashes back to yesterday in the waiting room. I saw a poster with the Latin phrase amor fati. I googled it and found out it means “love of one’s fate.” Love your fate—that’s it—of course love your fate. What a simple, beautiful motto to live by. I wish I had come across it decades ago. Instead, here I am finally discovering the key to life just when I might be going to die. What a lovely fate.
