Lacuna

Wading through the silence of fifty people, I reach the spot where she rests, almost in peace. In shaky whispers her son tells me how they watched her move from chatter to mono syllables to silence. For an entire year, I—her closest friend—was unaware of her grave situation. I fumble for words. He tells me she is counting hours. I sit by her bedside holding her hand. A faint smile blooms on her lips.

  1. Powerful. Having had a similar experience helping a friend at the end of his life, this haibun really resonates with me. Well done.
