give you a present?  A first gift, token or more, who can say?  Perhaps a book, one I love and feel that you would too.  I will.  Shall I write a small, sweet (not too) something on the flyleaf or nothing at all?  The date?  Your name, mine . . .  I wonder.  Which book, new, off my own shelf, or none at all?   I waver.  I wait.

there it stays
on the too-full shelf
my book of dreams
its pages worn and soft
the inky words fading away
