Reawakening

landprayer
the day’s warmth
deeper in the sand

Stars peer into the desert canyon. They watch as I walk in the darkness, following the footsteps of someone who came before. Placing my hand to climb, I startle at a scorpion the size of my fingernail. Nearby, a caterpillar wanders its way through a vastness of stone. Perched on a high ledge I find a scatter of knapping shards. On their shattered edges I feel an echo in the land. This is a place where someone once slept.
