The Mountains Live On
As a chilled late August wind blew through the Catskills night I revisited some memories. A modest fair was tucked into hills and hollows as children flew through the dark air in a Tilt-A-Whirl and the spokes of a Ferris-Wheel sparkled.
Long ago the Catskills was the most dense rural resort area in the world. Year after year families returned to spend their summers in the bungalows and hotels, having stories to tell when the snow began to fall. Bob Dylan and Arlo Guthrie performed for the crowds before they returned to Woodstock, children caught fireflies as teens danced their first slow dances. It was the place where the kids grew up…a place where many experienced their first real crush and “making out”. If you ever spent time in the Catskills there is probably someone reading this right now who was in love with you then, and still thinks of you.
