I see her sitting across the aisle of the school bus. Morning after morning, her wild brown hair refusing to be tamed by an elastic band or ribbon. She smells of wildflowers growing on windswept hills; a secretive smile and a faraway look reflected in her sky-blue eyes.
At Monday morning’s assembly, the principal makes an announcement. Counseling will be offered in the gymnasium from lunchtime.
