Reawakening

Now that I live alone, I talk to the trees and the shrubs, not forgetting to say “sorry” to the earth over whom I walk. Most often, out of respect, I carry my footwear and walk barefoot. The wind caresses my arms even as the birds continue to sing the hours away. I begin to hum, taking the cue from a bulbul.

Kala Ramesh is a renowned pioneer in the field of haikai literature in India. Her 2017 book Beyond the Horizon Beyond was awarded a Rabindranath Tagore Literary Prize Certificate. Her latest book is The Forest I Know (Harper Collins Publishers, 2021).
