Barbara Sabol
Jigsaw
Through the brush I try to identify a bird whose body is segmented by reeds and long-needled sugar pines. I first see a bar-striped wing, then the tip of a down-curving beak; next, its quick dip into marsh water. A pencil-thin yellow leg lifts, and now just toes appear, splayed like a wrinkled rake. A flash of iridescent green, stalking some invisible prey.
