Whispers

The first morning goes well. It’s after lunch that it hits,  coffee and . . .  No, not a cookie, just coffee. Stop flicking the lighter. There’s nothing to light. You crumbled them last night, tore them to shreds. Satisfied you felt like you won a battle. No. No. The battle hasn’t begun yet. Get moving. Do something. You know he would encourage you. Remind you,  get annoyed if you didn’t try. So, try. Get up, get out. Take a deep breath. Write something.

I wear his robe
with sleeves too long
and hem on the floor
I hear him whisper
careful now, don't trip and fall
