teaching hens to count
each of her parents had their own lovers. they and she knew this but never talked about it. she was an only child and the adults would come and go without much warning. to keep her distracted on sunny Sundays they had chosen a house with a giant backyard and bought her all manner of pets and paraphernalia.
today she had turned the garden into a classroom. the chalk was twice as long as her fingers. she walked it across the giant blackboard she had proudly carried out alone all the way down from her bedroom, from where she had heard noises and did not want to ask for help.
