The Rest Is Silence

Elwood bends to the corner table, switches on the radio, a soft glow lighting its face as he turns the dial. Watery voices, garbled snippets of song spill into the quiet room. And then, a clear signal, his favorite lyric. A German river, a soldier’s ballad, the lost Fräulein he sings to each night when the stars start to shine. Elwood settles into his listening chair. Overhead, deep beyond his imagining, Sputnik circles, spinning his world toward another brink.
