Joanna Ashwell
Midsummer
We are halfway between the sway of blue sky and light, the trail of long evenings. The birds are busy, tree to tree, shade to light, light to shade. A blackbird lies sunbathing with wings outstretched across the lawn. The air is alive with bees and butterflies. The notes of wings flutter from flower to flower. I sit beneath the apple tree, my glass equally full of water and light.
