Near Miss
In the vacant lots where I always walk, alone among desert scrub and boulders—three strangers, white-haired, deep in conversation. I hesitate. Walk toward them, or away? Toward, I decide, in a moment of bravado—but, as I approach, they veer off without seeing me.
