Homecoming

Not the house I grew up in, but the house of my parents now. Out in the country, paved roads give way to gravel give way to dirt. A nice enough house, perhaps a little larger than needed, nestled in the woods. When they first moved in, there was a path in the back to a little shed I could see as a writer’s retreat. The path since overgrown, the shed left to the fishers nesting under the floor. My pencil and paper at the dining room table, sharing space with a jigsaw puzzle in progress.

    • During hunting season in rural areas, people and animals (such as dogs) will often wear orange high-visibility vests so as not to be mistaken for deer or other targets.
