Mona Bedi

Travelogue

My elder sister is visiting me. She surveys the house as always, pointing out dust, criticizing the decor and sometimes throwing in a word or two of half-hearted praise.

This time, her focus is on the innumerable fridge magnets. ”Why so many?” she asks. “Because I am so well traveled and the magnets are beautiful,” I reply.

A houseboat from Kerala, Burj Khalifa from Dubai, Matryoshka doll from Russia, Lucky elephant from Thailand, Sydney Opera House… all are up there on my fridge door. The riot of colors and their different shapes and sizes are a vision.

But not for her. I can sense a twinge of jealousy in her voice. After all, she has hardly traveled.
