Opening the curtains to this morning’s first light, the room—each piece of furniture, each keepsake, each odd and motley object—awakes in its soft glow: the patched and worn Queen Anne chair, passed down from your great aunt, looks restored to its earlier charm; the faded patina on my grandfather’s roll-top desk seems revived to a golden sheen; the framed black and white of a one-year-old, waving in his onesie, comes alive at the very spot it was taken so long ago. We can never know if he was waving goodbye or hello.
