The whip-poor-wills’ calls before dawn were so sharp and clear through the walls of the rented farmhouse on the green ridge, I felt for an instant as if I were inside a vivid dream… Or inside the house my grandmother built out of hay bales in the big field, and I’d finally had the courage to stay there all night with only a square of stars over my head.
