Derek Ross
Appointment
Outside the local hospital. I am sitting in a garden on a bench—the ornamental type, made from a single piece of wood.
I hear a rabbit scurrying around somewhere close. They are tame creatures, providing a comfort in their own unknowing way.
There are roses in the air, early roses perhaps, but unmistakable.
I lick my lips and taste pollen. Sweet, sharp. Not entirely unpleasant.
The fingers of my right hand stroke the texture of the bench’s grain.
The sun burns.
