Parked next to me, behind the wheel of his old Cadillac, he crochets. The needles are like giant drumsticks in catcher’s mitts. The yarn is thick for the sleeping bag he plans to donate to a homeless man, someone who admires the work but doesn’t ask for it. He says his mother taught him the art. Through the yarn he says he talks to her.

Richard L. Matta grew up in New York’s Hudson Valley, attended university, practiced forensic science, and now lives in San Diego.
