What No One Says About Dying

My husband always wore western-style trousers or jeans. Never in his life did he wear shorts. Yet, when he became ill, he could no longer step into his jeans, so I sheared off three pairs. One washing unraveled the raw edges.

We ate lunch at our local restaurant even though it meant he wore those frayed cutoffs.  When we started to leave, the waitress said someone had paid our bill.

The next morning I drove my husband to a little coffee shop nearby.  He loved those daily visits with his friends.  As he hobbled inside, I felt a tightness in my chest.  Was it a heart problem or the sight of my valiant husband in his hated short pants?
