Stopping on a Dime

She is always there, at the turn into the shopping center, no matter the season, the weather. And the light always seems to shift from amber to red just as I reach that corner. In my side view, I watch her hitch a ragged cardboard sign higher while she paces the sidewalk, scanning the line  of drivers en route to the shoe store, the grocery. I couldn’t tell you the color of her eyes.
