Adelaide B. Shaw
Reviving the the Plan
The five-year anniversary of his passing will be here in a few days. I shall observe the day by myself, as my children and grandchildren will be working. And, that’s fine. I’ll spend the day doing what I usually do—the daily chores, some reading, some writing, some painting. Maybe I’ll go out for lunch or dinner, and after dinner I’ll sip a scotch, a single malt, one that he liked, which I’ll have to buy. I’ll spend the day remembering all the good years before his illness and the last three bad years. And, when I’m ready for bed, maybe sleep will come quickly or maybe it will be another night of wakefulness, but the dawn of a new day will come and I’ll greet it with resolve and enthusiasm and a gratefulness that I had what I had and now have what I have.
my many lists— there’s a satisfaction in writing the words even knowing I may never get to check them off
