Moon Rise

squawking
cockatoos quiet
in the twilight
a dingo’s baleful howl
gathers the pack

The call comes as the moon rises, soft as a lover’s velvet lips with the promise of a kiss.  It sends shivers down his spine.

The alley beside the pub reeks of yesterday’s vomit and other discards. Among the shadows, coins and packets give hope of something to relieve the gnawing ache, untie the knot in his belly.

tourniquet tight
beneath falling stars…
the barren plain
fills with unfurling
wildflowers
