Cloud of Unknowing

Cricket song fills the air, making the dense fog almost palpable. Overhead, the form of a great blue heron silently manifests out of nothing and dissolves back into no-thing. Flowing in and out of my lungs, the soft gray vapor reminds me that I am not only wave but also water.

I write a poem
on a willow leaf
adrift 
on the endless river
that has no name

The author or co-author of seven books of tanka, tanka sequences, and tanka prose and haibun, she’s a global moderator of the Inkstone Poetry Forum. She lives with her husband and one Abyssinian cat on a small organic farm in central North Carolina.
