He was a law student from the country, studying at the same university, when DJ offered me a lift. The sun was low in the sky, butterscotch melting into the Bay. His vintage car sported racing green duco and impressively large headlights. The lock on the passenger door was faulty, so he tied rope around the handle. We zigzagged through traffic, roof down, wind ruffling our hair. Seatbelts? He planned to get some. Freedom? The growl of the engine beneath my feet.

That day was the last time I saw DJ. No longer able to pay his fees, with an ill father, he had returned to the country. Had his freedom-loving car in racing green been sold to a vintage car enthusiast? Been abandoned in a ditch beside the highway? Or had DJ charmed the local beauty queen who liked the feel of wind in her hair?
