Haiga Showcase: Marilyn Ashbaugh

Marlyn Ashbaugh

Photographing nature and writing haiku are my two passions.  I begin with an image and reflect on its haiku moment.  I draft haiku and revise using the “not too close, not too far” guideline until the pairing is complete.

Orchard Drizzle haiga

With “orchard drizzle” we see shapes in various degrees of soft focus. They blend well with the poem, which is filled with light and suggestive contemplation. The juxtaposition is unexpected and full of mystery. The framing with the text works very well, as placing text straight onto an image can be difficult; here, Marilyn has used the framing and colouring to good effect.

No need for words haiga

In Marilyn’s haiga “no need for words,” water and words blend effortlessly—a trademark of a fine haiga. The image of the trees reflected in water seems to ripple into the words below, delivering an emotional depth. Once again, the framing and text enhances the mood.

tear by tear haiga

In “tear by tear,” we again have the element of water. The poem associates the birds’ flight against the gray, overcast sky with the falling of teardrops, and the last line of the poem introduces a poignant note that echoes. The poet’ sensitivity is rendered beautifully through the combination of words and art.

all day snow haiga

With “all day snow” we have a fantastic image displaying the unique and delightful geometric patterns of an individual snowflake. The pattern is almost birdlike, which makes a lovely connection to the cardinal in the haiku. May we all have the sensitivity that Marilyn has demonstrated in this series, and the skill to bring it to fruition.
