Tuesday Morning

exiting
a six lane highway—
horses in a pasture

The bayou now behind me, the sprawling city of Houston lies ahead, where I am scheduled for eye surgery tomorrow. I settle into my friend's home. They are traveling for a few months. It's a perfect place to recover.

It's a beautiful rambling ranch on a half acre of land...envision a country meadow in the middle of suburbia.

hidden eggs—
from out of tall grasses,
clucking hens

The night's filled with anxiety. Waxing moon.

daybreak—
a bright overhead lamp
in the operating room

Back at the house—a cat's meow—surrounded by darkness

lifting her veil
she returns her child's smile—
the first sun
