Memory
A fiery Viking ship sails the lake at dawn. It’s a model ship, three feet long, hand-crafted in Thailand from teak. It carries her ashes. Her son, in a wetsuit, pushes it out. Silently, we watch it burn and then sink. The widower brings out a thermos flask. Hot toddy warms us, and we drink to her memory. The sky lightens as he serves croissants and black coffee.
