I knew that it was going to be hard to see it when summer vacation was over. Being the corner crossing guard there was no way to avoid the bloodstain. Its presence on the concrete was a daily reminder of his absence from my classroom. The hardest part was trying not to step on it while others walked on him – talking about their day, laughing, and having the nerve to move on with their lives and leave me there alone with the stain.
