Ludmila Balabanova

Mother

Her main profession was “mother.” She cooked lunch and dinner, read fairy tales aloud to us, drew with colored pencils our favorite heroes. At night she sang lullabies to put us to sleep. She answered all our questions. Using a big orange and a green apple, she explained to us how the earth revolves around the sun, why we have day and night, why after spring comes summer, then autumn, winter...

now feeding light
to the waxing moon...
winter night

Note: A different version of the haiku was first published in Epstein, Robert. They Gave Us Life: Celebrating Mothers, Fathers and Others in Haiku. Middle Island Press, 2017.
