The things we put on or near the body – a tiny circle of turquoise that flashes from an ear, white-gold rings we wear on our fingers that signal status: wealth, marriage, friendship. Studs that pierce the most tender skin: cheeks, nose, navel, the pale lids of the eye? Which will survive longer, these forged accouterments or the twin circles of pelvic bones and white rib struts ascending?
