Making Faces
What will I look like when the swelling goes down? Will the changes be subtle or startling? Will friends do a double take? People pay good money to have their faces cut, skin tightened, noses chiseled, ears pinned back. But this procedure is something the oral surgeon says I need—my jaw pulled forward and my chin set back in order to save my teeth. I wonder, when it’s all over, and I smile at myself in the mirror, if I’ll secretly mourn the me I will never see again.
