I spend the afternoon on Ugljan Island moving between the cold waters of the Adriatic and the shade of an olive tree. I quietly root for the butterflies pursued by a six-year old lepidopterist, his yellow butterfly net fluttering in the breeze. Later that evening, I watch the ceremony for Croatia's entry into the EU. Herman Van Rompuy gives a speech, and I'm disappointed he doesn't throw a haiku into it. I think about the butterflies.
