Cordwood

I've been cutting firewood for almost 40 years. After the cordwood is down, after it has been bucked, split and stacked under cover, the slash – branches left in a pile near the stump – still needs to be burned. Every year I pause a bit longer before setting the fire.

On the severed limbs
tiny blossoms on twig tips
still dreaming of Spring.
