There's Something in the Eyes

of my old dog today. Something beyond aches and pain. Something like sadness, as if he knows he hasn't long to live. But perhaps I'm only projecting what I feel.

the old dog's
labored breath
rasp of wind-blown leaves

He's visibly weaker and his vision and hearing have worsened. A small dog, I have to lift him to my lap as he's now unable to jump. He's been my friend for 15 years and like all really good friends I will miss him deeply when he's gone.
