Standing on the Outside

It looked easy, the business of flirting, of attracting boys, not just any boy but the handsome ones, the tall and blond, the blue-eyed stand-in for a Greek god, the broad shouldered football player with dark wavy hair, the smooth dresser with the fancy car, until it was clear they were attracted, like bears to honey, to the slim and blond, the curvy with auburn waves, the ones with perfect teeth and perfect vision, with long lashes. Still… even knowing this, hope resurfaces again and again to find the sensitive soul, the one boy in a thousand who will see beyond the surface.
