Patricia N. Rogers

Disheartened

In conversation, my friend, a counselor for a drug rehabilitation program based in a correctional facility, said to me, "I don't want to waste my time working with people who do not want to make a change anymore." She was quite for a moment, but before I could respond she continued, "you know, the ones who continually manipulate the system, and who would manipulate me in a second if I let them." She sighed, and I heard the sadness in her voice, and what I thought was the weariness of having to walk daily into a world filled with madness.

in their own lives
