My Friend George

is a double amputee. This is the consequence of a decision he made to ward off the slow putrescence of his limbs by a disease which, though no admirer of extremities, as least has a sense of symmetry. But George received no guarantees that such stringent measures would stanch its onslaught. I've never known the courage it would take to make such a decision, nor the desperation, nor am I certain I could distinguish between them.
