Undercurrents

The safety of calm water is only a hundred yards away, a few swift paddle-strokes on most days.  But undercurrents are strong.  Even the wild geese take to the rocks and walk the distance.  It seems so easy at first, kayaking out of the cove and free-flowing down-channel.  Just where did this frantic feeling come from, this need to get back?  The struggle is almost over. Over and over, I reach out and the boat is gone . . .
