It begins with the haunting call of a platinum flute, echoing through dark woods to a clearing of crystal. I am a figure skater, grace notes pirouette on a pond of frozen light.

The flight of intervallic leaps from note to note may seem linear. Yet the sequence of interlocking spaces spirals out beyond time. It ends with the unfolding of an ice petal arpeggio.

The metallic resonance created by French composer Edgar Varese in 1936 feels as breathtaking as a frost flower in bloom. Applause rings out and I bow, having returned to the world.
