Contemporaries

When my mother was near the age I am now, she would call with news of yet another friend's death. I paid little attention, too busy with my own problems to understand.

Yesterday a member of the Kerrville Writers Association died, age sixty-one. Jan and I enjoyed friendly chats before and after the monthly meetings. Because she was in a wheelchair, and I have weak knees, neither of us used the stairs. It won't be the same on the elevator without her.
