Swallowing Pride

From the time of his wife's death, he paid a weekly visit to a friend of hers (a lady in her fifties), until she too died. It was typical of his unstinting generosity with his time (as well as his money) towards those who were in need. Though he disliked one sister - unlike the other–he went to see her twice a week in hospital for years. "I've taken on morality", he used to say, "because I have the money to do so." This was not strictly true.
