Eating Very California
After a downer of a day, I take an upper – a
long jog down Salad Bowl Boulevard to the Cherry Bean for a decaf and half-and-half,
and then, a self-fixed dinner.
No mean day anymore. Slumped in a rough-hewn chair on the redwood deck under
the live oak, I chomp on stringy celery stalks between long swigs of the beet
borsht.

I top off this treat with a wedge of watermelon.
A strictly veggie dinner—fruits of the earth. That's what I call treating
myself right—having
my fill,
but, instead of feeling mean, feeling lean.
