No, I will tell my chums when they come around, my father’s not at home. Hardly ever is. He’s away on business. Abroad? Yes, abroad mainly. On secret missions wherever the government chooses to send him. A spy? Well, more of a diplomat I suppose. It sounds good. And as far away as you can get from the lowly nondescript insurance clerk mum threw out all those years ago.

Susan King is a retired librarian happily living by the sea in North Wales, U.K. Her interest in Japanese short-form poetry began in 2002 when she discovered haiku. More recently she has ventured into haibun, and has had work published in Akitsu, Blithe Spirit, Haiku Journal, Presence, Time Haiku, and contemporary haibun online.

  1. This is brilliant Susan. I love the way you spin the fantasies in the prose followed by the shock at the end and then the exquisite link and shift of the haiku.
